When you bring a newborn home there are a lot of changes, emotions and just good old fashion nerves! Whether it’s your first or your fifth, I hope you take lots of photos of them! You can never get this time back and some of the funny little things that they do you will forget, they will fade away in time and this is your chance to capture those special moments.
For newborn sessions, I have to admit I am not the best at swaddling, or getting those perfectly posed shots of a newborn, so I like to do more of a lifestyle shoot for them. What is lifestyle photography you ask? I was trying to think of good way to describe it, so I looked on the interweb (lol) and found a great description: photography that aims to capture portraits of people in situations, real-life events or milestones. Primary goal is to tell stories. I think that is a great description of it and I really like to tell a story when capturing their first week at home with their families.
With Covid it has made it impossible to come to the hospital and do newborn shoots or fresh 48. So coming to someones home is what it is. I try my best to make sure every thing is clean, take my shoes off at the door, wear a mask and wash my hands, which should be done anyway, but you have to make sure you have done a little extra!
Some of the shots I like to get when doing a newborn shoot: mom holding baby, maybe breast feeding (depending on comfort level), dad holding baby, baby in the crib, if there is a sibling: reading to the baby, laying down with the baby, playing with a toy. As a family, sitting on their bed is one of my favorite spots, there is a lot of love and snuggles that happen in a bed, maybe reading a book together and of course can’t leave out the kisses!
Let’s chat a moment about what to wear for you shoot, neutral or pastel tones are best, let’s focus on baby! I think adding a soft pop of color is good, especially when mom and baby wear the same color. Kaitlyn did a great job coordinating everyone in her shoot. I think ANYONE that can have the house clean, have 2 young kiddos, have taken a shower and has make up on AND coordinated the clothes is a HUGE over achiever in my book lol!
I am still a work in progress (on a number of items) but I think these photos turned out very sweet and beautiful. I hope you enjoy them too!
